The VPX specification enables many different software protocols and above all fast serial data transfer. This includes PCI Express, RapidIO and Ethernet. For laboratory use, for testing individual PCBs or complete applications under the VPX specification, Schroff now presents a compact VPX desktop system.
The system is 4 U high, 44 HP wide, 275 mm deep and has two integral handles at the front. Two new backplanes were developed for this system: a 3 U, 5 slot full-mesh VPX backplane with a slot pitch of 0.8“ and a 3 U, 7 slot backplane with star topology. The 7-slot backplane is built to the OpenVPX specification and with its 1" slot pitch is also suitable for boards with clamshells. Such boards can now thus be tested in this air-cooled system before they are fitted into a conduction-cooled enclosure. Both VPX backplanes are ready for data transfer rates of 10 Gb/s per port.
The system is equipped with a plug-in 19" power supply unit (3 U/8 HP) with an output rating of 250 W and rear-mounted IEC mains input module with fuses and switch. The board space and power supply unit are cooled by two radial fans with airflow rates of 36 m³/h each. Airflow is from front to rear.
