August Issue of Boards & Solutions / ECE Magazine

This is a combined issue of Boards & Solutions and ECE Magazine because for the major section – the Yellow Pages European Embedded Companies Directory - it makes a lot of sense to cover the full scope of the embedded market in a single compact reference publication.

Fujitsu: Mini-ITX mainboards for digital signage solutions

Fujitsu presents at Embedded World two new mini-ITX mainboards for the use in Digital Signage applications. AMD-chipset based, the models D2963-S1 and -S2 are equipped with two different AMD Mobile processors. Designed for use in 24/7 applications under full load and in high temperature ranges, both versions are especially suitable for the fields of Digital Signage, Kiosk, IPC or medical technology. The mainboards offer an availability of up to five years. Fujitsu offers a special case for its mini-ITX mainboard, which has been designed especially for the D2963-S models. Despite its compact construction (52 x 191 x 250 mm), the case is highly expandable. A 2,5“ SATA hard drive, a USB-WLAN Module and a low profile PCI Card can be added. The second serial interface the D2963-S offers onboard is also supported. A built-in micro-switch, connected to the D2963-S’ intrusion connector, monitors any unauthorised opening. Additionally, the mini-ITX case can be secured against theft by a Kensington lock. An optional mounting angle with VESA-standard drilling holes enables a simple assembly for displays and monitors. The whole package is CE-certified.

The mini-ITX boards are equipped with an AMD M690E & SB 600 chipset for DDR2 800/667 SDRAM Memory. The D2963-S1 supports the energy-saving AMD processors Mobile Sempron 200 U, whereas D2963-S2 is run by AMD’s Mobile Athlon Neo X2 L325. A powerful ATI Radeon X1250 graphics controller is integrated in the chipset. VGA, DVI and 24bit Dual Channel LVDS can be combined and are also supported in Dual Independent Display mode. Additionally, the mainboards offer a temperature-dependent cooler controlled via internal microcontroller, high definition audio, 2 x Gigabit LAN, PCI, PCI Express x1 and Mini-PCI Express-Slot, 2x Serial ATA interfaces, 8 USB 2.0 interfaces, Compact Flash card-support and watchdog onboard. Power is supplied either by an internal or external 19 to 24 Volt supply unit.

Linux users will benefit from a free “Embedded Linux Board Support Package” by Emlix, which is part of the evaluation kit. Pre-installed on a CF-card, the Emlix solution makes the mainboard ready to use. Users of Windows receive a free “Board Support Package” for embedded XP.
