Amongst the highlights of the latest issue of Intel's Embedded Innovator are technical articles about rugged design, touch-screen automation and flexible fan-less modules.

Test automation framework - make or buy?

The main purpose of a test automation framework is to increase product development and product process efficiency. This paper reviews the advantages and disadvantages of making or buying a test automation framework.

Combining Boundary Scan and JTAG Emulation for advanced structural test and diagnostics

Boundary Scan and JTAG Emulation are two perfectly complementary methods, which are fused into one flexible and powerful technique for advanced structural tests by GOEPEL electronic’s VarioTAP technology.

Packaging of rugged commercial-off-the-shelf systems

Rugged COTS systems must be packaged to perform in conditions which may include challenges such as thermal extremes, vibration, shock, electromagnetic (EMI), nuclear/EMP and human source hazards including intrusion and compromise.

AdvancedTCA makes the most of multicore processors

Multicore processors fit nicely into the ATCA infrastructure. The redundant, high-speed ATCA backplane supports both communication and compute-intensive applications.

Advantech: EBX board with three Gigabit LANs

Advantech announces the Intel Atom N450/D510 industrial grade EBX board—PCM-9562. The new processor enables power reduction, smaller systems and performance improvements. PCM-9562 can support up to three Intel Gigabit LANs, two watchdog timers, and comes with a rich array of I/O interfaces. It also includes power-off protection and UL60601/EN60601 medical certification. PCM-9562 can support three Intel Gigabit LANs and LAN3 is designed with medical applications in mind, with UL60601/EN60601 medical certification.

PCM-9562 also includes power off protection features preventing accidental contact with the power button that might turn off the equipment. This feature can also be configured to be disabled after bootup or to switch the system off by pressing and holding the button for a set delay time. PCM-9562 includes a second Watchdog Timer, which offers more security for customers.

PCM-9562 uses the latest Intel Atom N450/D510 processor + ICH8M chipset in a compact EBX form factor. It can support HD audio, eight USB 2.0, six COM and LPT. The compact design is suitable for customers who are concerned about chassis space limitations. PCM-9562 also provides an optional heat spreader thermal solution that makes it easier for customers to design their chassis with better thermal results and more compact. PCM-9562 can support Advantech SUSI API and WinXP/XPe, Windows 7, Windows CE, QNX and Linux (by request).
