Lastet Issue of Intel's Embedded Innovator

Amongst the highlights of the latest issue of Intel's Embedded Innovator are technical articles about rugged design, touch-screen automation and flexible fan-less modules.

Test automation framework - make or buy?

The main purpose of a test automation framework is to increase product development and product process efficiency. This paper reviews the advantages and disadvantages of making or buying a test automation framework.

Combining Boundary Scan and JTAG Emulation for advanced structural test and diagnostics

Boundary Scan and JTAG Emulation are two perfectly complementary methods, which are fused into one flexible and powerful technique for advanced structural tests by GOEPEL electronic’s VarioTAP technology.

Packaging of rugged commercial-off-the-shelf systems

Rugged COTS systems must be packaged to perform in conditions which may include challenges such as thermal extremes, vibration, shock, electromagnetic (EMI), nuclear/EMP and human source hazards including intrusion and compromise.

AdvancedTCA makes the most of multicore processors

Multicore processors fit nicely into the ATCA infrastructure. The redundant, high-speed ATCA backplane supports both communication and compute-intensive applications.

August Issue of Boards & Solutions / ECE Magazine

This is a combined issue of Boards & Solutions and ECE Magazine because for the major section – the Yellow Pages European Embedded Companies Directory - it makes a lot of sense to cover the full scope of the embedded market in a single compact reference publication.

Lippert: PC/104 SBC with Atom Z5xx

The Cool LiteRunner-ECO is a standard PC/104 form factor carrier board for the CoreExpress-ECO Advanced COM modules. The CoreExpress-ECO Advanced COM module is used as processing core, which is available with the Z510 or Z530 variant of the processor. This keeps the power consumption low and allows for passive cooling, using either a heat sink or a heat spreader/heat pipe combination.

The board comes with interfaces such as two Gigabit Ethernet ports, 2 SATA and 6 USB interfaces. It also features legacy interfaces like flexibly configurable serial ports, LPT and PS2, as well as 8 general purpose I/O signal pins that can be freely configured by the application.

Multi-media capabilities are provided with VGA and LVDS display connections and high definition audio interfaces, both digital and analog. A μSD slot is available, which support bootable media; this eases software development and update, only a tiny SD card needs to be changed. Even WLAN can be integrated, using the standard PCI Express Mini-Card slot.

The Cool LiteRunner-ECO uses LEMT to handle the boards housekeeping tasks like power sequencing and watchdog. It also provides useful utility functions for the application, like a secure, write and clear protected Flash area that can be used for security keys, or several operation mode counters. LEMT also enables remote condition monitoring.
